A Hustle Born Out of Necessity In 2017, Backyard Barber didn’t have a fleet of trucks or a warehouse. It started with a vision, a used riding mower, and a desperate drive to support a growing family.
At the time, I was working in banking, wearing a suit every day with a second child on the way. Money was tight, and "good enough" wasn't an option. I started with that mower and a borrowed trailer hitched to an old Suburban. I’d drive that rig to the bank, and on my lunch breaks, I’d swap the spreadsheet for a weed eater, mowing properties in my suit and tie to make ends meet.
A Husband & Wife Powerhouse
When my wife, Kelsey, finally asked where I was disappearing to every afternoon, I told her I was heading to a customer’s house. She didn't even know I’d started a company! But that "side hustle" became our lifeline. It allowed Kelsey to take an extended maternity leave with our second child, stepping away from her corporate role in Accounts Receivable/Payable at a local company.
But Kelsey didn't stay on the sidelines. She soon joined the team full-time, bringing her financial expertise and an incredible work ethic to the field. If you think mowing in a suit is crazy, you should have seen Kelsey: she was physically on-site assisting with a landscape installation while 8 months pregnant with our youngest child. That is the level of dedication we bring to every single project.
Why the Name "Backyard Barber"?
Once Kelsey saw the vision, she gave us the name: Backyard Barber. We wanted something catchy, but more importantly, we wanted a name that represented precision.
To this day, we still get the occasional phone call asking for a haircut, but the name stuck because it’s a promise. Just like a barber focuses on the fine details of a fade, we focus on the sharp edges of your lawn, the clean lines of your hardscaping, and the manicured perfection of your landscape.
Raising the Next Generation
Today, Backyard Barber has grown from one guy in a suit to a full-service team serving Quincy, IL. We aren’t just a "mow and go" operation; we are a family of five living out our dream.
Our three children live and breathe this business. It’s not uncommon to hear them talking shop, and our 8-year-old recently celebrated with a mower-themed birthday party—complete with a zero-turn cake and a supervised "test drive" of the mowers for his friends.
