Dethatching, also known as “thatch removal,” is the process of removing the layer of dead grass and other organic matter that accumulates on the surface of a lawn over time. This layer of material is called “thatch” and can prevent water, air, and nutrients from reaching the roots of the grass, which can lead to an unhealthy lawn.
Dethatching can be done manually with a thatch rake or with a power dethatcher machine. Power dethatchers use rotating tines or blades to lift and remove the thatch layer. It is generally recommended to dethatch a lawn when the thatch layer is more than ½ inch thick, as this can be detrimental to the health of the grass. However, it is important not to dethatch too aggressively, as this can damage the roots and leave the lawn vulnerable to disease and pests.
